Previous versions of Thunderbird (version 68 and before) had built-in S/MIME support, and it was possible to add OpenPGP support using the Enigmail add-on and GnuPG software. OpenPGP has been enabled by default since version 78.2.1. Thunderbird 78 has built-in support for two encryption standards, OpenPGP and S/MIME.
